Institute of Creative Design
Institute of Creative Design
I. Institute history
The Institute of Creative Design is established in 2011, and provides two curriculum tracks: “culture creative design” and “creative living space”. It is intended to recruit postgraduates who either have related training background of design or are dedicated to cultural and creative industries, and space and digital design. Since the institute is coordinated by three departments of the Design College, they can share all the existing resources. Postgraduates are encouraged not only to study specialized knowledge but to seek an inter-disciplinary profession.
II. Curriculum plan
The core curriculum of the institute is aimed to serve “living application design industry” and accordingly, two curriculum tracks are conceived: “cultural creative design” and “creative living space”, integrating equipments and resources of three departments. Three dimensions are contained, “cultural creation”, “green design”, and “digital media”. Course planning is conducted to build up theory foundation as well as to cultivate creative ability on prospect students, who are enabled to demonstrate their potentiality both in theory and practice. To fulfill the requirements of a master degree, students can choose to hold a graduation exhibition, participate national competitions, or write up academic theses. It is expected that, through the cultivation of postgraduate courses, students can obtain the fundamental knowledge and skills in creative living application design and meet the professional demands of private industries and governmental organizations.
III. Development characteristic
1. The dimension of “cultural creation”: In Taiwan, the cultural and creative industries are currently developed to be diverse and become highly appreciated by modern civilized countries. Following the trend, this institute proposes four characteristic aspects, “cultural assets”, “brand design”, “cultural design”, and “living vitalization”. Accordingly, in the track of “cultural creative design”, it includes the courses of “cultural design integration”, “three-dimensional modeling creative study”, “digital image design” and “brand design strategy”; while in the track of “creative living space”, it includes the courses of “old building re-use and vitalization” and “domestic living space design”.
2. The dimension of “green design”: “Green” is becoming an implementation of living style. Emphasizing the concept of environment preservation and energy saving, the design conception moves from glamorous superficial design to highlighting the very nature of design, and starts from small products around domestic environment and personal living space. Both product design and living space design are intended to mimic the nature. Conforming to the trend demand, this institute proposes four characteristic aspects, “green products”, “green technology”, “green home”, and “green environment”. Accordingly, in the track of “cultural creative design”, it includes the courses of “green product design”, “brand design strategy” and “compound media material study”; while in the track of “cultural creative design”, it includes the courses of “domestic green environment and technology” and “landscape and environment study” in the track of “creative living space”
3. The dimension of “digital media”: Due to the change in the transmission of design concept, the information technology brings a great impact on design industry. It is the expectation of the Design College that students can elevate personal value in the profession through the training of digital media skills. Therefore, five characteristic aspects are conceived in course planning: “virtual reality”, “computer animation”, “digital modeling”, “compound media materials” and “digital overdubbing”. Accordingly, in the track of “cultural creative design”, it includes the courses of “computer animation modeling and interaction design”, “compound media material study”, “media commercial design study”, and “digital overdubbing design”; while in the track of “cultural creative design”, it includes the courses of “virtual reality and animation design” in the track of “creative living space”.
IV. Special instruments
The space and equipments provided by the three departments are able to satisfy students’ needs in creation design and dissertation writing. Among others, the track of “cultural creative design” is equipped with high grade PC, static image process instruments, touch pad control system, 3D laser cuter, high-speed scanner, color verification system, AR player system, interactive floor projection system, AR live show system, remote control system, interactive game area and the track of “creative living space” with high performance PC, AutoCAD, VIZ, 3ds Studio, virtual reality projecting system, 3D scanner, A0 plotter, digital camera, digital camcorder, image snap system, laser distance measurement system, total station altazimuth, high grade graphic computer, and so on. To develop specialized characteristics and courses, the institute will expand its space and install more advanced equipments.
V. Faculty
In this institute, there are one professor, six associate professors, and ten assistant professors, in total seventeen members. Professional and experienced part-time teachers are also invited to join the staff.
VI. Scholarship
Postgraduates with outstanding academic performance can be awarded Design College Scholarship. In addition, a variety of scholarship is also provided by the university.
VII. Advance to PH.D. study
The institute encourages students who are interested in the field of cultural creative design and industries, architect and internal design, and digital media to pursue further degrees and all the staff is devoted to train these students to achieve their goals.
VIII. Occupation
Three departments in the Design College are dedicated to an intensive interaction with industries and associations and thus provide students with a great amount of work opportunities. Similarly, the students who fulfill the postgraduate program will be recommended to renowned design profession companies. The postgraduates completing the curriculum track of “cultural creative design” can choose their career in the profession of commercial product design and marketing industry, such as design creation, marketing management, characteristic commercial product design, and multi-media design; while those completing the curriculum track of “creative living space” can choose their career in the profession of architect and internal design or virtual reality design, and exhibition design. Moreover, students can also participate governmental exams for public officials or select to teach in schools or universities. It is clearly to see that students can seek professional career in a wide range of occupations after they obtain required knowledge and skills.
